Pastelón is a classic Puerto Rican casserole made with sweet plantains, savory ground beef, and cheese. This recipe combines flavorful layers, including ground beef, onions, garlic, and a blend of spices, with sweet plantains for a delightful dish.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
In a pan on medium-high heat, add ground beef, diced onion, minced garlic, and Sazón Completa seasoning.
Use a meat smasher to combine and cook until the meat is no longer pink. Drain any excess liquid.
Add Worcestershire sauce, sofrito, olives, and tomato sauce to the meat mixture. Combine and cover. Simmer on medium-low heat.
Meanwhile, place the plantains in a large casserole baking pan and bake for 25 minutes.
Once the plantains are done, remove half and smash them to make an even layer covering the bottom of your pan.
Smash the other half in between parchment paper and reserve for the second layer.
Add half of the Picadillo (meat mixture) on top of the first layer of plantains. Cover with half of the cheese.
Repeat the layers of plantains, meat, and cheese.
Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted evenly.
